Diamond jewellery is generally made with 14-karat gold. While pure gold is 24 karat, 14-karat gold contains approximately 59% pure gold. There are several reasons for using it. Pure gold is quite soft; mixing it with a harder metal, usually copper or silver, creates a firmer alloy. Jewellery made from this alloy holds its shape better and is less likely to deform. Other reasons include achieving different gold colours and keeping the gold component of an already valuable piece relatively affordable.<\/p>\n
Traditional rose-cut diamond jewellery is generally made with 8-karat gold, which contains approximately 33% pure gold. Compared with 14-karat gold, it contains more copper. The reddish colour of copper gives it a natural rose-gold tone that complements these diamonds. More recently, 8-karat gold has also been used in classic diamond jewellery, including promotional solitaire and eternity rings and gift jewellery, to reduce costs. However, it is not recommended for pieces intended to be white gold<\/strong>, as 8-karat gold may tarnish.<\/p>\n Some diamond jewellery is made with 18-karat gold, which contains 75% pure gold. It is somewhat softer than 14-karat gold.
